The Escambia County Community and Environment Department, Water Quality and Land Management Division, has been selected to receive a competitive Recreational Trails Program Grant in the amount of $200,000 from the Florida Office of Greenways and Trails. The funding will be used to add to the existing hiking trail on the Jones Swamp Wetland Preserve area, a boardwalk over wetlands and a trailhead east of Fairfield Drive.
This is the third extension of the Jones Swamp Trail and part of a larger trail and conservation project in the southwest portion of the County. The Southwest Greenway will link Lexington Terrace Park, Glynn Key Boardwalk, Jones Swamp Wetland Preserve and Tarklin Bayou State Park. The 12 miles of greenway will traverse through several unique habitats and accommodate a variety of diverse outdoor interest, including bird watching, hiking, picnicking, biking and environmental education.
